Update tonight...

Simple Machine: Screw

Update: The Faming of the Screw

In the past month or so, this image has gotten popular. It first appeared in an entry where I discussed the disadvantages of using a screw as a form of locomotion, as part of a series on why the lever is the best choice of simple machines for organisms to use for movement. I quickly sketched this image in Illustrator to show the basic principle of how a screw works.

As of this writing, if you go to Google Image Search and look up "Simple Machine: Screw" or some variation thereof, this image is the first one to come up. I suppose that it's becoming known to physics students or teachers, as the page that carries it accounts for the majority of hits to PaaT.

If you've come to this site to find this image, you're welcome to make use of it for any non-commercial purpose. All I ask is that you drop me a line at jja@nac.net and let me know what you plan to use it for.

Until!
